4 categories of TLD

categories of TLD

The Domain Name is made up of two parts:

SLD (Second-Level Domain), what comes befor the dot.

TLD (Top-Level Domain), what comes after the dot, said also extension.

TLDs are divided into 4 categories: gTLDs, ccTLDs, ngTLDs.

gTLDs

gTLDs are the highest levels in the Domain Name System (DNS). They include: .com, .org, .net, .biz, .info. These are the most popular in internet. .com is overused and often misused, just because it has become a habit.

ccTLDs

ccTLDs, or country code top-level domains, are two-letter domains specific to a particular country or territory, like .us for the United States, or others. (see here the full list) A specific ccTLD signifies that a website is associated with a specific geographic location.

ngTLDs

ngTLDs, or new generic top-level domains, refer to the new wave of TLDs that have been released since 2013. Unlike the original gTLDs like .com and .org, ngTLDs include a diverse range like .shop, .store, .club, and .game. They're meant to offer more specific and relevant domain name options for various industries and communities, making it easier to find the perfect web address for your needs.

sTLDs

There is also the sponsored TLDs (sTLD) as .bank, .coop, .edu, .gov, .travel, .museum, etc., those have a sponsor representing the narrower community that is most affected by the TLD, while an unsponsored TLD operates under policies established by the global Internet community directly through the ICANN process.

What category is better for your website?

What is better depends on the content of your website. If you create a personal website where you talk about your life and family it's better chosing .blog or .me. Or if you want to show your recipies choosing .food is better than .com. An so on. You can see the list of ngTLDs here. They cover more than thousand themes.
If your TLD is consistent with the content of your website, this helps users to recognize what you are dealing with from the domain name, thus indirectly improving SEO performance.
