categories of TLD

The Domain Name is made up of two parts:

SLD (Second-Level Domain), what comes befor the dot.

TLD (Top-Level Domain), what comes after the dot, said also extension.

TLDs are divided into 4 categories: gTLDs, ccTLDs, ngTLDs.

gTLDs

gTLDs are the highest levels in the Domain Name System (DNS). They include: .com, .org, .net, .biz, .info. These are the most popular in internet. .com is overused and often misused, just because it has become a habit.

ccTLDs

ccTLDs, or country code top-level domains, are two-letter domains specific to a particular country or territory, like .us for the United States, or others. (see here the full list) A specific ccTLD signifies that a website is associated with a specific geographic location.

What is better for domain .shop or .store?

shop and store extension
.shop

.shop is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) launched in September 2016.
The idea of a .shop generic top-level domain was around since at least 1999, when an attempt to register it with IAHC was made. Its proposed usage is similar to current endeavors: to provide a dedicated space for ecommerce on the Internet.
The application process takes some years with different companies.
In May 2012, nine applicants including Google, Amazon and Famous Four Media applied to ICANN to operate the .shop registry. Applications were also received for the extensions .shopping, .store, .buy, and names with similar meanings in non-Latin languages, and ICANN indicated that they would not create extensions that will confuse users. This so-called "string similarity" is an unresolved issue in the new gTLD process, and is to complement dispute resolution.
In January 2016, GMO Registry of Japan bought it for $41.5 million.

A new gTLD for music community

music TLD
A .music domain is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) for the global music community.

It is intended for use by artists, bands, industry professionals, and companies related to the music industry. The purpose of the .music domain is to provide a recognizable online space that associates websites with music-related content and activities, facilitating a stronger presence and identity within the digital music market.

The .music domain registration is managed by DotMusic Limited. To register a .music domain, applicants must prove their connection to the music industry, which helps maintain the domain as a trusted, sector-specific resource. This reduces the risk of cybersquatting and fraud, common issues in more generic domains. It also allows for greater control over one’s online presence, which is crucial for maintaining the artistic and commercial integrity of music professionals.

What about .io extension?

The .io domain is quite interesting! Originally, it was the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the British Indian Ocean Territory. However, it has gained popularity in the tech industry because “IO” is also an abbreviation for “Input/Output,” a common term in computing.

This dual significance has made .io domains especially popular among startups, tech companies, and developers. They are seen as modern, tech-savvy, and are often used for innovative projects and platforms.
The .io domain is quite versatile and is used by a variety of websites beyond just games. Here are some common types:

Tech Startups: Many tech companies and startups prefer .io domains because “IO” stands for input/output in computing, making it a natural fit for tech-related businesses.

Cryptocurrency Platforms: Websites related to blockchain and cryptocurrency, such as Opensea.io (an NFT marketplace) and Etherscan.io (an Ethereum blockchain explorer), often use .io domains.

Developer Tools and Services: Platforms offering tools and services for developers, like Greenhouse.io (recruiting software) and Codeship.io (continuous integration service), also favor .io domains.

What about .xyz extension?

The .xyz extension is a versatile and popular top-level domain (TLD) introduced in 2014. It’s known for its flexibility and affordability, making it a great choice for a wide range of websites, from personal blogs to business sites12. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it offers a lot of available domain names, which can be harder to find with more traditional extensions like .com or .net.

The .xyz domain gained significant attention when Google’s parent company, Alphabet, chose abc.xyz for its corporate website. This move highlighted the potential of the .xyz extension to create memorable and unique web addresses.

The .xyz domain is incredibly versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes. Here are some specific use cases:

Startups and Entrepreneurs: It’s a great choice for new businesses looking for a modern and memorable domain name.

Creatives and Artists: Ideal for portfolios, showcasing art, music, or other creative projects.

Tech Companies and Innovators: Many tech startups and innovative companies prefer .xyz for its contemporary feel.

Bloggers and Content Creators: Perfect for personal blogs, vlogs, and other content-driven websites.

Does TLD extension affect on SEO?

The choice of a top-level domain (TLD) extension can have some impact on SEO, but it’s generally not a major factor. Here are a few key points to consider:

Generic TLDs (gTLDs): Extensions like .com, .org, and .net are treated equally by search engines. Google has stated that newer gTLDs (like .tech or .io) are also considered equivalent to traditional ones in terms of SEO.

Country Code TLDs (ccTLDs): Extensions like .it for Italy or .fr for France can help with local SEO by signaling to search engines that your site is targeted towards a specific country. However, they might limit your global reach.

Perception and Trust: While the TLD itself doesn’t directly affect rankings, it can influence user perception. Some TLDs have been associated with spammy behavior in the past, which might affect click-through rates and user trust.

Branding: A well-chosen TLD can enhance your brand’s identity and relevance. For example, .tech for a technology company or .store for an e-commerce site can make your domain more meaningful and industry-specific.

So, while the TLD can have some indirect effects on SEO, focusing on high-quality content, user experience, and proper technical SEO practices will have a much greater impact on your site’s performance.

What about .ai extension?

TLD ai extension

The .ai domain extension has become quite popular, especially among tech companies and startups. Here are some key points about the .ai domain extension:
